A MiskoMethod Performance Workshop

Controlling the Moment

How I Use Bill to Lemon to Control the Moment, Train the Audience, and Engineer a Bigger Finish

You probably don't need another trick.

You already know enough tricks. That is not the problem.

The problem is that most magicians don’t know how to take the tricks you already do and engineering their results to your advantage every time.

And before you get upset with me: IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT!

Most magic on the market today is designed for better methods.

Rare is the magic product that is designed to engineer better results!

Bill to Lemon is one of the strongest plots in magic.

  • a borrowed bill vanishes.
  • it appears inside of a lemon.

THAT SHOULD DESTROY A ROOM

But a lot of performers let the audience get ahead of them.

The audience hears, “this fruit has been in plain view the entire time.”

They think, “no way!”

Then they see the bill inside.

They think, “THAT’S IT!”

WOMP. WOMP.

All of your pent up energy and momentum is lost. By the time the signature is confirmed, the room has spent most of it’s reaction.

The performer did the trick…but they telegraphed the ending!

That is what this workshop is about.

In the Controlling the Moment download, I break down the structure I use to keep the audience from arriving too early.

I show you how I delay the reveal, reintroduce the bill, cue the audience, stop the applause before it starts (yes, really), train the spectator, and release the room at the exact moment I want them to react.

Not because I’m hoping they will respond.

Because I am building the response!

For over ten years, Bill to Lemon has been the closer in EVERY show I do.

Cruise ships. Theatres. Corporate events. Private shows.

It works everywhere because the trick is not doing the heavy lifting.

The structure is.

In this Performance Workshop, I’ll show you a full real-world performance of my routine, then break down the timing, scripting, staging, spectator management, applause control, and audience education that have cemented this as my closer.

This is not about how to get a bill into a lemon.

This is about how to keep the audience from spending their reaction too early, how to control the moment they think the trick is over, and how to engineer the finish so the final confirmation lands as the climax.

Controlling the Moment is built around my work on the Bill to Lemon, this is really a workshop about how to look at any routine and ask:

Where does the audience think the ending is, and where do I need it to be?

What You'll Watch

In this nearly 3-hour download, you’ll see:

  • two versions of the full routine performed in front of a real audience with real people.
  • the complete breakdown of the structure.
  • why the audience thinks the ending is in the wrong place.
  • how to use time misdirection for theatrical control.
  • how to raise the stakes when borrowing the bill.
  • how to introduce the lemon organically
  • why I don’t use a lemon
  • how and why to deliberately wave off early applause.
  • how to train your spectator to correctly deliver the final confirmation.
  • how to train the audience to understand the standing ovation, without begging for it.
  • The Misko/Lawrence fold, a method for folding a bill for greater visibility and speed of opening.
  • a director’s commentary pass over the performance footage.
