I was discussing magic with a buddy the other day and he said, “I do mostly close-up, so I don’t have much need for a director.”
After I spat the water from my mouth, I calmly explained that every person that steps foot in front of a group of people to communicate to an audience should have an objective set of trusted eyes critique their work.
In other words: EVERYONE NEEDS A DIRECTOR!
The goal of a director isn’t to rebuild your work in their image. The goal of a director is to help you achieve the results that you want to achieve sooner than without!
Choreography is one way a director can help.
Choreography isn’t just a set of dance moves – it is also a predetermined set of movements executed at a precise moment to bring about a desired result.
Onstage this could be a myriad of things from when to grab the loop, to how to hold the ring, to when to pivot the back palm.
Close-up it’s a whole new set of things:

when to open your hand for the coin vanish
-
when to grab the glass to put the card underneath
-
how to adjust the deck for a cleaner peek
It is the last example here which I discuss in the video below. This simple fix will take a crunchy moment in your close-up card magic and make it invisible.
